Bacalhoa Buddha Eden Zen garden: a touch of the far east in the middle of Western Portugal – Let yourself go through an impressive collection of Buddha statues, figures of ancient oriental gods. A replica of the terracotta army found in China is also there to be displayed.
A Piece Of Paradise
Right next to the Literary town of Óbidos, there are 35 hectares of Buddha statues and Oriental figures as being the property owner’s very personal answer to the destruction of the Buddhas of Bamiyan Valley in Afghanistan.
The site was open back in 2006 and presented a total amount of six thousand tons of marble and granite sculptures, depicting a myriad of Oriental gods and figurines, impressing its visitors by the scale and dimension of the outdoor exhibition. Ten years went by and there is now a lot more to experience: art exhibitions, guided tours and wine tasting experiences.
Right next to the entrance there’s a KOI lake of enormous dimensions surrounded by palm trees and protected by dragon figures, granting a feeling of tranquility upon arrival.
A total of 700 terracotta figures with the size of 1.80m can be seen all over the hill, representing the army of the first Chinese emperor Xi’an.
Golden Buddha figures; gigantic marble statues; endless tracks and crossroads with staggering views to the surrounding vine fields make it up for a great start on your day. The visit takes up to 3 hours of your day.
Suggestion: visit the garden early in the morning and during week days if possible, so you can take the most out of this amazing site. After 11am (specially on weekends) excursion buses start to kick in and the Zen mood somehow fades away.
