Óbidos Lagoon offers arguably the best conditions for wind sports like Windsurfing and Kitesurfing in Portugal mainland. It is perfect for absolute beginners getting started due to the vast area of protected lagoon, but can also challenge the most advanced ones with powerful beach breaks just around the corner. This natural body of water remains also a very important natural reserve of strict importance to the local fishing economy.
A Hotspot for Kitesurfing in Portugal
Obidos Lagoon comprehends a total area of 7 km2, stretching approx. 4,5 km in length and 1800 meters wide. Every year a growing number of kitesurfing travellers seek here to experience the full potencial of these coast as well as the joys of the local lifestyle at an unspoiled-by-the-masses region.
At the northern side of Obidos lagoon, you will find the village that also gives name to the bay – Foz do Arelho. Here, you can expect to find a busy place (specially in Summer), with all the services of accommodation, space to park your van, camping, grocery shops bars and restaurants.
The access to the beach and to kitesurfing zones is made easy through the sand plains. By the evening, the ocean promenade offers a laid back atmosphere with amazing sunsets, ocean view bars serving cocktails, music and ‘petiscos’ (portuguese word for tapas). Check these Cais da Praia Restaurant, Tibino or Távola if you’re serious about trying the local petiscos.
Obidos lagoon protected reserve
At the south margin of the lagoon, wilderness calls for adventure. It might be more difficult to find the right place to access or park to gear up and access the lagoon waters.
There is not much signage and indications available so it’s easy to get lost when you’re not familiar with the endless network of secondary roads and little corners, which in our opinion it’s just perfect to explore. Settle in for the day and enjoy the vocal active migratory bird population that surrounds you.
Restrictions During Summer Season!
During the off-peak season, from September 16th to June 14th it is allowed to practice all kinds of wind sports and activities throughout the entire lagoon area. Though, from June 15th to September 15th Kitesurfing, Windsurfing, Stand Up Paddle, Sailing and any the other activity, are only allowed upon a certain distance from the surveilled areas towards the inner lagoon direction.

Local Culture & Clamming
Obidos Lagoon is famous for its quality shell fish. “Clamming” is a professional activity still very significant for the local economy.
Many professionals perform everyday almost like a ritual, the art of clamming from the top of their boats. Those techniques were learnt from the past generations and they still also use their great-grandfathers’ wooden boats ‘bateiras’ to help in the process.
Every year, events and rituals of spiritual nature take place to celebrate this body of water that have been always the people’s livelihood – The Lagoon’s Boat Procession in June; the yearly village celebrations to honor Nossa Senhora da Conceição in August, or the Shellfish Festival in May are some of the ‘Must Experience’ if you’re in town.
